So You Want To Be A Reviewer?

The dOc Reviewer Spiel:

Who You Are:
We are looking for enthusiastic, informed writers who have a deep knowledge of movies, excellent writing skills, and something to say ("This flick was awesome, dude" types need not apply), who are interested in working for DVDs. It's all—including the website—for the love of the thing.

Minimum Technical Requirements:

  1. Must have a full, calibrated DD5.1 and or DTS HT setup
  2. Must have a calibrated 27" TV or greater
  3. Must be a resident of Region 1 (US or Canada)
  4. Must be 18 years or older

How Do I Get Started?
You can download the MS Word dOc review template HERE. This is an RTF file (22K) that can be opened in any word processor.

What Do I Need To Do?
We request three review samples in our format, one of which MUST be a special edition. It is always helpful if you pick a disc or film you donšt like (in some way) as one of the samples. Everything that can be reviewed on the disc should be; get at all of the nooks and crannies. Please be sure to read a few of our recent reviews first to understand what we expect.

You may send the reviews one at a time or all at once. The former tends to speed up the process, while allowing us a chance to offer feedback, if necessary.

What Movies Should I Review?
It doesn't matter to us, but if you have an area of expertise choose within that genre. What we do care about is this:

  1. One (1) of the three (3) MUST be a special edition.
  2. One (1) of the three (3) MUST be a NEGATIVE REVIEW of a disc or movie.
  3. Please choose titles we do not already have in our database (use our search function if you are unsure).

What Happens Once I've Submitted?
All applications are passed through our reviewer board. Writers are chosen based on review samples, attitude, and timeliness.

What If You Choose Me?
You will be notified via email. There will be a reviewer's contract that must be signed and returned to us.

What's With The Contract?
Basically, you agree that you will write reviews—to the dOc standard, in the dOc format, in an agreed upon timely manner—for each disc you are sent. If not, you agree that you will return the disc(s) in original condition, replace them out of your own pocket, or pay us to replace them at full cost. (Unfortunately, you can't always recognize a bad apple until it poisons you.)

Will I Get 10 Discs To Review Right Off The Bat?
Um, no. You will join the reviewer rotation at the bottom of the list, and work your way into the most trusted sanctums with hard work, honesty, integrity and dOc pride!

How Does This Whole Reviewer Thing Work?
We determine the distribution first based on need (ours) with an eye towards want (yours), quality, timeliness and turnaround of your reviews. Sometimes it's the other way around—people always get discs they want, just not every one. All of the content providers get equal time on this site, whether they are independent, music content providers, or major studios. We generally review in reverse street date order, but exceptions do occur. If you receive a disc before its street date, the review is expected before that street date... extenuating circumstances taken into account.

Will I Have to Review Discs I Don't Want?
Yep...it's part of the game. You will, or you won't review here. Besides, bad movies can be fun to review!

What About Copyright?
As things stand right now, although we STRONGLY believe in creative rights, digitallyOBSESSED.com. asks to retain copyrights; we do, however, have a separate contract that provides reviewers with appropriate compensation in certain circumstances. We are pursuing opportunities that will make us all money, which may or may not require us to readdress this issue in the future.

I Work 60 Hours A Week. Will I Be Expected To Review 10 Discs Per Week?
We are looking for workhorses, but if we like your stuff and you can't write as many reviews per week as others, we'll find a happy medium.

I Forgot What I Need To Send You Already...!

  1. The 3 samples outlined earlier to be reviewed by our applicant panel
  2. Your HT setup
  3. Any other reason (knowledge, background, etc.) why you should be chosen over another applicant
Email to debi lee mandel.

Geez, Anything Else? Blood, Perhaps?
Yeah, we're demanding, but that's only because we want the best, most driven, enthusiastic writers. If you don't think it's worth it...fine, we understand. Please continue to enjoy the site.

Good luck!
