All over the new Internet these past few weeks, there have been many articles analyzing "what is wrong with American Idol?" Although still profitable, the show has lost its cachet and impact, along with it status as ratings juggernaut. One might have thought a few years ago that it didn't matter who the judges were or what kind of contestants populated the staged, but the last several painful years has shown this to be far from true. There have been possible solutions batted about but I have not seen the one answer that I believe to be the one.
DVD Review CONCRETE BLONDES
Amusing enough crime comedy with earnest performances and a competent production, Concrete Blondes is diverting enough for a look-see.
Suffers from a multitude of problems including lack of charisma and drama. Tom Cruise is not a good fit in the Salvation Army clothes of military cop turned heroic drifter, Jack Reacher. Rental only and you really might as well wait for it be on TBS.
DVD Review LIZ & DICK
Exploitive much? Lindsey Lohan brings her tabloid gravitas to a movie picking over the bones of the woman, whose life was the material of tabloid legend. Not very good as a biography, not very good as a movie, this film careens from cringeworthy to boring. For Lohan completists only (or maybe Grant Bowler fans).
DVD Review CHINA BEACH: THE COMPLETE SERIES
China Beach is an outstanding television show with great production, writing and acting. It is dramas like this that make the DVD format worthwhile. There is a delicious opportunity for those who didn't see it, hardly remember it or loved it to experience the show all over again. Highly recommended.
The extreme voyeurism of reality television reaches out and tweaks the worst part of our natures. If Bristol Palin left her diary on the table in your kitchen, would you read it? If a Palin reality show was filmed in Alaska and nobody watched would it really be real? These questions and more bedevil me as we journey to the land of the midnight sun where the men are men and apparently the women are too in Bristol Palin: Life's A Tripp.
DVD Review DESIGNING WOMEN: THE FINAL SEASON
Designing Women, created by Linda-Bloodworth Thomason, was a very successful and unique situation comedy for its era with an almost completely female cast and a unique tone and perspective. Unfortunately most of the accolades pertained to the first five seasons of the show. Cast changes mixed up the chemistry of the show over its final two seasons and typically obtuse network decision making finalized its demise.
There was a simpler time. There was a time gone by. Somewhere before the summer of 2008, most of us had blissfully only heard the name of Palin in the context of Michael of Monty Python fame. Now you can try as you might and you cannot avoid the juggernaut media domination that is Palin-nation. Her, him, them - all on TV. Help.
DVD Review TITANIC: THE COMPLETE STORY
In this anniversary year, there has been more than the normal amount of material about Titanic in popular culture including a new mini-series and a re-release of James Cameron's popular Titanic film remastered in 3D. Titanic: The Complete Story is a fine dvd set and for those who have dreamt of and wondered about this ship. They will enjoy learning just a little bit more of this doomed journey and the people who you never get to hear about that died that fated night on April 15th one hundred years ago.
Highly anticipated, Game Change ultimately falls flat, but not because it is not entertaining enough in a superficial way. The story of Sarah from Alaska and her ascension to the national stage is an unpleasant story of unpleasant people trying to do very unpleasant things. Maybe playing it for real laughs would have redeemed it.
I am a blogger about entertainment.
Love to watch television.
