DVD Review DIABOLIQUE (BLU-RAY)

Criterion has made me quite the happy movie geek by issuing a pair of Henri-Georges Clouzot masterworks on Blu-Ray, beginning in 2009 with the release of The Wages of Fear and in 2011 with Diabolique. This is a beautifully crafted suspense film, daring and intelligent, a tightly wound mystery that has served as the foundation and inspiration for countless imitators over the following decades since its release in 1955.

Highly recommended, and one of my favorite releases of 2011.

DVD Review THE NATURAL (BLU-RAY)

Despite the fact that it completely changes the ending and purpose of Bernard Malamud's classic novel, this Barry Levinson-directed period piece is a baseball love story from start to finish. It's not the director's cut, but I'm really okay with that, because this one always moves me.

If you own the SD director's cut you're not going to get any new measurable supplements here, but the image tweaks and the lure of Randy Newman's lossless score should be more than enough to tempt you for a double dip.

Highly recommended.
