DVD Review 42ND STREET FOREVER

If the thought of nearly four hours of B-movie trailers from the late 1960s/early 1970s - blaxploitation, sexploitation, martial arts, horror, sci-fi, vengeance, etc - gets you as giddy as it does me then the 42nd Street Forever: The Blu-Ray Edition from Synapse is necessary viewing.

Recommended, but for a very select audience.

Of the many public works projects of the New Deal, Grand Coulee Dam loomed largest in America's imagination, promising to fulfill President Franklin Roosevelt's vision for a planned promised land where hard-working farm families would finally be free from the drought and dislocation caused by the elements. DVD Review GODZILLA (BLU-RAY)

Criterion pays long overdue scholarly homage to one of the classic monsters in all of cinema, and the inclusion of both the original 1954 Japanese film and the laughable 1956 American "reworking" only reinforces the fact that you have not seen Godzilla until you have seen Ishiro Honda's somber cautionary tale of H-bomb testing and the giant monster destruction it awakens.

Highly recommended.

A weird, engaging, criminally underseen import, this is a great vehicle for Jim Sturgess. There are plenty of shocking twists and turns that take this story to some extremely dark places.

DVD Review THE DISAPPEARED

Here's an under-the-radar suspense film that is likely to be lost in the shuffle, and one that you should add to your rental queue pronto if you like bleak thrillers with supernatural trappings. This one sports a great performance from Harry Treadaway and a mood-enhancing surround mix that really boosts the whole creepy experience.
