DVD Review THE RICKY GERVAIS SHOW

The content of the show is fairly simple. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant sit down with Karl Pilkington and ask him questions or lead him into conversation. Hilarity ensues and there is simply no telling where the threads are going to lead when the three get going. A large part of comedy is the bullying of Karl by Ricky in his aggressive way and Stephen in his passive way. Many of their insults pertain to the roundness of Karl's head. Some of it can be a bit mean-spirited, but there is no doubt that Ricky Gervais has one of the most infectious laughs on television.

Heretofore ironically unavailable in the U.S. (due to rights issues with the Donald E. Westlake novel upon which weíre supposed to believe it is ìbasedî), Jean-Luc Godard's candy-colored genre meditation Made in U.S.A. comes to DVD from The Criterion Collection. Thank goodness for the supplements, practically essential to unpacking one of the most challenging and inscrutable films of the director's celebrated 1960s output.
