DVD Review THE INNKEEPERS (BLU-RAY)

After the well-deserved genre success of 1970s-era retro throwback The House of the Devil - which was followed by the colossal mess that was Cabin Fever 2 - writer/director Ti West gets creative control again with The Innkeepers. Gladly this 'haunted hotel' flick doesn't try to be some sort of reimagined The Shining, and West shows some dandy chops building tension slowly and effectively with a minimum of so-called 'money shots'.

DVD Review THE LADY VANISHES (BLU-RAY)

This 1938 mixed bag mystery/thriller/comedy from Alfred Hitchcock - his last British-made film before Hollywood beckoned - remains one of his most enjoyable and Criterion has seen fit to release it on Blu-Ray finally. While undeniably corny and hammy at times by today's standards, The Lady Vanishes retains its own special ageless entertainment value through solid direction, snappy dialogue and a cast of colorful characters. This is a great example of the way they used to make them.

Highly recommended.

DVD Review DONNIE DARKO (BLU-RAY)

This 4-disc anniversary editions won't offer anything new, in terms of extras or image transfer, but the opportunity to get the full compliment of Donnie Darko versions (theatrical/director's cut/BD/SD/digital download) for well under $20 is a terrific deal.

Extras contain a rare and exclusive short film by Fellini, a video essay on the genesis of the film and a 50 page booklet with exclusive Fellini drawings. Hard-to-find, this 1970 film melds memoir and documentary into a circus of fiction and reality where Fellini delights in the role of ringmaster. The carnival-sounding score composed by Nino Rota, and an appearance by Anita Ekberg (star of Fellini's 1960's masterpiece La Dolce Vita), enhances the Fellini-esque experience.

DVD Review WOODENHEAD

Woodenhead is a dark, trippy alt-fairy tale shot in a very unorthodox manner, one that's comic, tragic, sexual and frightening. And then there's the music. The movie itself would be an easy recommendation for fans of the weird, but to make this a no-brainer this 2-disc set also includes a soundtrack CD.
