DVD Review THE BLOB (BLU-RAY)

Sure, it's stiffly acted and features some of the oldest teenagers ever seen on film, but as a trend-bucking representative sample of 1950s American-made "giant monster" flicks this is a genre classic. Plus, Criterion's Blu-Ray treatment is wonderfully done. Highly recommended.

DVD Review SPACEBALLS (BLU-RAY)

As a sci-fi parody this uneven comedy isn't Mel Brooks' finest work, but that's not to say it is not without its pleasantly juvenile merits. Sadly, however, this anniversary packaging doesn't offer much not already presented in the 2009 BD release, making it seem somewhat pointless.

Article The Newsroom: Cable News Media Played for Laughs and Cries

If everybody hates it, that usually means I like it. The Newsroom on HBO is one of the best things to come along in a while. Not just because it is Aaron Sorkin, not just because Jeff Daniels is not Tom Hanks and certainly not just because I hate the Tea Party too. All over the place and almost like the real thing, it is television worth watching.

Pasolini's notorious final film, one for whom the audience is likely self-selecting. Criterion's Blu-ray release has it looking as good as possible, and makes as persuasive a case for it being a masterpiece as one can.
