Despite the fact that it completely changes the ending and purpose of Bernard Malamud's classic novel, this Barry Levinson-directed period piece is a baseball love story from start to finish. It's not the director's cut, but I'm really okay with that, because this one always moves me.

If you own the SD director's cut you're not going to get any new measurable supplements here, but the image tweaks and the lure of Randy Newman's lossless score should be more than enough to tempt you for a double dip.

Highly recommended.

Three discs that demonstrate that on the little box, they still don't make 'em like they used to.

The Cubs search for their first World Series crown in over 100 years begins on Monday in Houston against the rival Astros. Carlos Zambrano takes the mound for the Northsiders.
