LOS ANGELES (June 1, 2012) - Mary Pickford, "America's Sweetheart," was the world's first true movie star, the first method actor, the first actor to ever have her name featured over a film's title on a cinema marquee, and the first and only actor to command earnings of 50 percent of a film's revenue. Born Gladys Louise Smith in Canada to Irish parents the same year that Edison invented the movie camera, her rise to cinematic superstardom paralleled the motion picture industry's first quarter century. She was the owner of a film studio, the most famous woman of her time and a two-time Academy Award-winner (and co-founder of the Academy itself). She was also a mercurial genius, given to strong passions and fits of self doubt, so much so that she nearly destroyed her artistic legacy by burning the negatives of 90 percent of her films, which she owned. A complicated, fascinating, unique woman, Pickford's achievements are astounding by any standard, in any era. In this fascinating new documentary, narrated partly in her own words, Mary Pickford reminds us why, as Leonard Maltin puts it, her "significance cannot be overstated."

After a world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, a robust international film festival run and a premiere for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angles, this gem of a film, directed by Emmy-Award (R) winning filmmaker Nicholas Eliopoulos along with fellow producer by Elizabeth Wood Coldicutt, captures an unparalleled time in cinema history. Thomas D. Coldicutt, Jr. (who is Canadian like Pickford herself) served as Executive Producer. It will be released for the first time on DVD and digital platforms by Cinema Libre Studio, which has acquired worldwide rights.

SYNOPSIS: Mary Pickford: Muse of the Movies traces the life and work of this legendary silent film star, movie pioneer, and keen businesswoman. Pickford's life (1892-1979) also parallels an even larger story, telling of the "birth of the cinema" itself. Pickford co-created United Artists' Studios, spearheaded the founding of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as established the Motion Picture Retirement Home. Mary, known as "America's Sweetheart," was the first actress to earn one million dollars, and only star ever to receive a 50 percent profit share of her movies. She was the first actor, male or female, to have her name placed on the Cinema's marquee along with the film's title, and she was the first to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a "sound" motion picture for her performance in the 1929 film Coquette. In 1976, Mary was presented with her second Academy Award for her humanitarian work.

In this documentary, through restored vintage audio recordings, Pickford narrates her own story along with actor Michael York. Classic film clips, rare home movies, and cameo interviews with Adolph Zukor (founder of Paramount Studios), famed aviator Amelia Earhart, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Lillian Gish, Buddy Rogers (Pickford's last husband), as well as the only interview ever given by Pickford's daughter, Roxanne Rogers Monroe, give the viewer an in-depth look into the early world of the American cinema.
