Wherever men and women cast their lines for the mighty Atlantic salmon, Megan Boyd's name is whispered in mythic reverence, and stories about her surface and swirl like fairy tales. In a cottage in northern Scotland without electricity, telephone or running water, Boyd long ago practiced her trade and mastered her craft, twirling bits of exotic feather and fur, silver and gold around a tiny metal hooks. They were seductive and perfect metaphors - in every strand there was a story, a mystery waiting to be unraveled.

Her works, with names like the Jock Scott, Lord Migdale, Covent Garden, Durham Ranger, Woolly Bugger and the White Lady, are highly prized. The American Fly Fisher magazine said Boyd's flies were regarded by connoisseurs as "the Tiffanies of the 20th century." When Queen Elizabeth II invited her to Buckingham Palace to award her the British Empire Medal, an incredible honor, Boyd politely declined, claiming she could find no one to watch her dog that day. So Prince Charles, an avid user of her fishing lures, went to Scotland to present the honor. At her death in 2001, The New York Times noted that this singular figure in the world of fishing had never once fished herself.

With breathtaking cinematography and strands of lush, hand painted animation, Kiss the Water adheres to and escapes from traditional documentary form, spinning the facts and fictions of one woman's life into a lyrical film about craft, devotion, love and its illusions. The film is director Eric Steel's follow up to The Bridge, an equally poetic and provocative rumination on suicides at San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. His new work is a sensual, hypnotic and haunting movie.

Outdoor Hub said the Kiss the Water "stands shoulder-to-shoulder with A River Runs Through It and Rivers of a Lost Coast, classic fly-fishing films that are not just entertaining but truly works of magical storytelling." The Hollywood Reporter called the film "a lyrical portrait ... equal parts journalism, speculation and tone poem. Quietly beautiful in ways that might win over viewers with no interest in fishing." Screen Daily said the film is "made with insight, intelligence and a painterly delight." "The most beautifully wrought documentary on the subject yet realized," raved Sam Juliano at Wonders in the Dark.

Kiss the Water was an Official Selection at several film festivals in 2013, including Tribeca, Edinburgh, Woods Hole in Cape Cod, Vancouver, Hot Springs, the Hamptons and St. Louis.
