Fans of Super Friends have highly-anticipated the release of the Deluxe Two-Disc Collector's edition of the "Lost Episodes" featuring the beloved comic book pantheon. Kids will love the colorful simple action stories that have a lot of focus on the younger characters. Older viewers might find it less than compelling viewing. These shows were produced after Super Friends ended its run and "lost" for more than a decade until they were shown as part of The Superman/Batman Adventure series.
Super heroes Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, along with Wonder Twins Zand and Hayna and their blue space monkey Gleek battle evil and protect the world from incredible dangers in these 24 episodes. Many of the favorite villains like Brainiac and Mr. Mxyzptik, plus the Hanna-Barbera-originated El Dorado, are found to be menacing humanity.
The animation and storylines on these shorts are typical for this time period of the late 1970's to early 1980's, meaning that they suffered. Hanna-Barbera went through a difficult patch in the 1980s and many of their many shows, showed the strain. The programs had a hit or miss quality level and this inconsistency might have contributed to the cancellation of the series. Despite that, there are some nice parts for comic book aficionados, especially Superman fans: Mr. Mxyzptlk, Jor-El and Lara when Superman returns to Krypton, Legion of Doom, Gorilla Grodd and Giganta, the return of the Phantom Zone villains who travel back in time to Smallville and Superboy, Brainiac, and Bizarro and Bizarro World.
There still is a simple refreshing quality to these tales of action and adventure. Engaging for youngsters and generally not offensive in their content, these discs will provide a reasonable amount of entertainment. Not too bad a deal.
