In Montreal, elementary school teacher Bachir Lazhar, from Algeria (portrayed by well-known Algerian comedian and writer Fellag) takes over an elementary school class following the suicide of their teacher. Though Lazhar is still recovering from a personal tragedy of his own, he gets to know his students despite a wide cultural gap and difficulties in adapting to the school system's constraints. In time, the students begin their healing process with the hope of transcending their collective grief, just as Bachir comes to be loved and respected by his class.
