DVD Review

Jackie Garth's directorial claim-to-fame lies with two sexy late-night cable flicks from 1996, the virtual-reality-based Cyberella: Forbidden Passions and the old "shared dreams" premise of Dream Master: The Erotic Invader. Both films are pretty interchangeable, and are really just setups for overly passionate movie sex, populated by vacuous, attractive nude humans doing what vacuous attractive nude humans do quite well in softcore sex films.

Unlike Cyberella: Forbidden Passions, which prominently featured Debra Beatty (not a bad thing, by the way), Dream Master: The Erotic Invader has the smarts to offer up a wider range of sculpted skin, led by fan favorite Lisa Boyle, here appearing as Cassandra Leigh. In fact, there is so much trim and fit nudity here that it was difficult to get bored, despite the overall lack of any real purpose other than allowing me the opportunity to ogle Boyle, Teresa Langley, Robbie French and Kristen Knittle.

Patrick Ahern plays Grant, a dream researcher who is working on perfecting the ability for "shared dreams," which in his world would allow two lovers to experience the ultimate erotic experience together. (Hmmmm. Shared dreams, eh? With my luck, I'd have that dream about the pirate and the talking raisins, which probably wouldn't do much to heighten any level of eroticism, but I guess that's my problem.) In order to facilitate this process, Grant has a cheesy assortment of wires and flashing lights, all designed to let him dive right into to someone's dream and join them.

To complicate things, a hot-tempered dream world dominatrix named Devora (Patricia Skeriotis) causes some problems for poor Grant, and eventually it is up to the lovely September (Boyle/Leigh) to rescue the dream researcher from having wanton sex. It's never made entirely clear why "dream sex" is so bad, because it sure didn't look particularly awful.

It should go without saying that a film like Dream Master: The Erotic Invader will never be remembered for any brilliant plot machinations, or insanely clever wordplay. Rather, its base level of entertainment rests firmly on the saline-enhanced endowments of the cast.

Image Transfer Review: Much like Artisan's treatment of Jackie Garth's other erotic outing (Cyberella: Forbidden Passions), the 1.33:1 full-frame transfer for this title is also hindered from being overly dark. The mood enhancing lighting is rendered noticeably muddy at times, which in a softcore sex flick is a tad disappointing.

Audio Transfer Review: Audio is presented in 2.0 Dolby stereo surround, and it is perfectly serviceable for the material. No noticeable hiss or crackle, and dialogue is clean and discernible.

Final Comments

Dream Master: The Erotic Invader is nothing more than a late-night cable softcore sex flick, full of beautiful bodies rolling around in carefully choreographed orgiastic abandon. This one merits a slightly higher blip on the voyeuristic radar simply for the presence of the stunning Lisa Boyle.
