It is also used in everyday language as a belittling term for an attractive woman living in the shadow of her husband—a "trophy wife," if you will. Potiche is also the title of an outstanding new comedy led by Catherine Deneuve, unquestionably France's most beloved actress, and Gérard Depardieu, one of the world's most respected actors. Their collaboration with the respected and prolific François Ozon, who's been honored at such prestigious international cinema celebrations as the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, and France's César and Lumiere Awards, yields the wittiest and most sophisticated comedy of the year.

Boasting the finest credits of any French film in recent memory, Music Box Films Home Entertainment will release Potiche on Blu-ray disc and DVD for the first time on July 19 (prebook June 22). The Blu-ray and DVD will carry the suggested retail prices of $38.94 and $29.95, respectively. Special features includes: 'Making-of' featurette, a whimsical extra segment, spoof trailer, and more.

The film is a loose adaptation of the popular 1970's French stage play by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Gredy (Cactus Flower). Set in a provincial French town in 1977, Potiche revolves around Suzanne Pujol (Catherine Deneuve, Academy Award nominee for Indochine), the housebound "trophy wife" of wealthy but tyrannical industrialist Robert Pujol (Fabrice Luchini, Molière). Seemingly naïve in the ways of the world—and business—Suzanne steps in to manage her tyrannical husband's umbrella factory after the workers go on strike. Inhaling her first whiff of the women's liberation movement that's in the air, Suzanne proves herself to be an intelligent, competent and assertive woman of action. It's only after she gets romantically involved with her ex-beau union leader (Gérard Depardieu, Academy Award nominee for Cyrano de Bergerac) and her husband returns to re-integrate himself back into the business, that things get complicated.

Potiche -- Synopsis:
It's 1977 and women's liberation is in the air but, Suzanne (Catherine Deneuve) is still the self-effacing, elegant housewife of wealthy industrialist Robert Pujol (Fabrice Luchini). Pujol oversees his umbrella factory with an iron fist and is equally tyrannical with his children and 'trophy housewife.' When the workers go on strike and briefly take Robert takes hostage, Suzanne steps in to manage the factory. To everyone's surprise, she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. Suzanne's new role throws her back in touch with union leader Maurice Babin (Gerard Depardieu), a romantic fling from the past that still has sparks. When Robert returns from a restful cruise looking to re-integrate himself into the business, things get complicated.
