Arlington, Va. - January 24, 2013 - PBS Distribution today announced it is releasing The Reagan Presidency on DVD. When Ronald Reagan entered office in 1981, unemployment was high, interest rates were skyrocketing, and the nation was plunging into a recession. Meanwhile, the Cold War was escalating as both Soviet and American leaders fired heated rhetoric from behind their podiums of power. The Reagan Presidency, a new three-part series, offers an in-depth study of Reagan's work in the White House as he dealt with these tumultuous circumstances. This documentary will be available on DVD February 26, 2013. The run time of program is 180 minutes and the DVD SRP is $24.99.
The Reagan Presidency unfolds over three hours. Hour one features domestic issues ranging from candidate Reagan's controversial post-convention speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi, to tax decreases, tax increases, social security reform, immigration reform, tax reform, farm policy, and the president's appointment of the first female Supreme Court Justice. Interview subjects in hour one include Sandra Day O'Connor, Ed Meese, Walter Mondale, Andrew Young, Henry Cisneros, Bill Bradley, Gary Hart, Paul Volcker, Robert Reich, Martin Feldstein, and Douglas Brinkley.
Hours two and three of The Reagan Presidency focus on the Reagan administration's foreign policy with detailed analysis of the role both Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev played in bringing an end to the Cold War. In addition to George Shultz and historians Douglas Brinkley, Kiron Skinner, and Richard Reeves, insights are gained through an international perspective that includes scholars and leaders from abroad such as Oscar Arias Sanchez, Andrei Grachev, and Constanze Stelzenmueller.
The Reagan Presidency also provides significant new insights into President Reagan's Middle East policy and the birth of the so-called War on Terror. Robert "Bud" McFarlane, Sam Lewis, Condoleezza Rice, and Middle East experts Reza Aslan and Trita Parsi offer perspectives on the administration's role in the Lebanese civil war, the Iran- Iraq war, the birth of Hezbollah, and the Iran-Contra Affair.
The series was produced by The Duncan Group with the same team that created the 2009 PBS documentary "Herbert Hoover: Landslide," currently available on DVD. The Reagan Presidency was produced in association with Crouse Entertainment Group and is presented to the public television system by Iowa Public Television. American Public Television (APT) is the distributor. Chip Duncan is the writer-director of the series. The producers are Chip Duncan, Tracy Dorsey, Patricia Ostermick and Robert Huck. David Crouse is the executive producer. The series is narrated by Lee Ernst and features an original music score composed by Peter Batchelder.
Support for The Reagan Presidency comes from Boeing Corporation, with additional funding from BNSF Railways.
