God's Pocket

Philip Seymour Hoffman in One of His Final and Finest Performances in Actor John Slattery's Directing Debut, Hitting Blu-ray and DVD on September 9, 2014

"It makes a very plausible whole, and Hoffman is great." - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian "If this film is any indication, [John] Slattery has an auspicious second career ahead of him behind the camera." - Austin Trunick, Under the Radar

The late Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, The Master) leaves an indelible mark with one of his final performances, in John Slattery's Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee God's Pocket. The heartfelt drama arrives on Blu-ray and DVD from IFC Films and MPI Media Group on September 9, 2014, with SRPs, respectively, of $29.98 and $24.98.

After Mickey Scarpato's (Hoffman) trouble-making stepson Leon (Caleb Landry Jones, Antiviral, Byzantium) is killed in a construction "accident," Mickey quickly tries to bury the bad news along with the body. But in the gritty, blue-collar Philadelphia neighborhood called God's Pocket, no secret can stay hidden forever.

When a local columnist (Richard Jenkins, The Cabin in the Woods, Six Feet Under) comes sniffing around for the truth, Mickey - whose line of work entails stealing vans of meat with his accomplice Arthur (John Turturro, The Big Lebowski, Fading Gigolo) - quickly finds himself stuck in a life-or-death struggle compounded by a body he can't bury, a wife (and grieving mother) he can't please and a debt he can't pay.

Based on the novel by the National Book Award winner Pete Dexter (Paris Trout) and featuring a top-tier cast including and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan, Vera Drake), acclaimed actor John Slattery's (Mad Men) impressive directorial debut God's Pocket is a winning dark comedy that marks the emergence of an inspired directorial presence.

"John Slattery's direction is skilled and steady ... Great actors at the top of their game working with rich material," raved critic Richard Roeper. David Sexton of the London Evening Standard said, "God's Pocket is the best Pete Dexter film, true to his louche, combative vision, tonally surprising, violent and alarming at one moment, then rudely funny and grotesque." Matthew Turner of The List said, "Slattery draws terrific performances from his superb cast: Hoffman and Turturro make an appealing best buddies double act, while Hendricks is heartbreaking as the grief-stricken mother and her scenes with Jenkins are quietly devastating."
